What am I missing?

How often do you stop to smell the flowers? Do you wonder sometimes, what am I missing out on? The flowers above are from my front garden. Every year I can’t wait until they bloom because they are so pretty and bright. When they first bloom we are all fascinated and we admire their beauty. Eventually, though we walk by and barely notice them. Why is that?

The flowers don’t change, our thoughts about them do.

As things become part of our every day, we don’t think of them as being as special as when they first appear. We lose interest and overlook how amazing things are when they become commonplace.

What am I missing?

I ask myself this a lot in my weight loss journey. If I am not losing weight I will ask myself this question. As the things I do become boring I would sometimes forget how important they were.  I drink at least 64 oz of water and I get at least 7 hours of sleep a day.  These have become part of what I do on a daily basis and I didn’t realize how they actually impact my weight loss.  A couple of weeks ago I decided to try increasing the amount of water I drink and lost 2 lbs that week!  Everything else was the same.  I had forgotten that water makes a big difference in weight loss and that as the weather increased my body probably needed more.  Even my body was just used the how much water I drank, it wasn’t telling me it was thirsty but look at the difference an extra couple of glasses made.    

Learn the skill…

Remembering to stop and notice how important the things around you are is a skill.  Make sure YOU aren’t overlooking a habit or losing sight of the impact it has had on your life. Have you had habits that were around so long you forgot that at one time they were like those beautiful fresh flowers? Often we stop doing things when they get boring only to find out that they were a big part of our success. When we pause….

When we pause, we get the chance to notice the miracles around us. It’s hard to notice anything at all if we are too busy or too rushed. Do you ever drive home and not remember the details of your drive? Has someone spoken to you, you were distracted and then had to pretend like you heard them? We don’t notice so much of the things around us because we are just too busy. We don’t slow down and notice things we think are ordinary and we miss the miracles because of that. I love helping clients get more out of life by seeing the miracles around them, seeing the things that are going well. I help them see what they weren’t. Life is so much more satisfying when we aren’t focused just on what is going wrong every day.
